Puzzle pieces

This design is surprisingly easy AND you get to use four colours at once!

I chose yellow as the base, pink, green and orange for a summerish look. (My very own Tardis in the background)

So I started out using tape to keep the lines of my first square in shape but it was just quicker and easier to hand paint the square.

Add each colour in a section and wait until they fully dry for the dotting.

To get the puzzle effect, use your dotting tool and dab the colours around, I did it in a anti-clockwise fashion, and link the dots to the original colour. You should end up with something like this =

I was going to put a glitter top coat over (as you can see with my pinky in the first picture) but then you couldn't see the detail so all the other fingers got just your average clear top coat.

Use any colours that suit you and it will turn out fabulous :)

Starry Night

This is one of my favourite pattern/art for a thumb nail! I don't think the other nails are big enough to fully show the gradient.

What you need:
  • 2-3 different colour blues and a black
  • Glitter polish and or glitter of any kind
  • Toilet paper or sponge ( I prefer toilet paper because it leaves a bumpiness)
  • Top coat

Paint your nail(s) with the lightest blue first and let that completely dry.
Make sure each layer is dry before adding the next layer.
Wrap the toilet paper around your finger and slather on the colour you are using and each layer just dab it around your nail.
Grab the next shade and dab it on 3/4.
Dab the next shade on 1/2
I do a dark blue on the next 1/4 and then almost dip the tip into a black polish although you can just do 1/4 dark blue or black depending on your nail length and amount of polish variety you have.

After all this has dried, paint the glitter polish on the top 3/4 and BOOM, you have stunning starry night nails

These invite complements where ever you wear them :)

Glitterholic

I am in LOVE with the glitter shards!
It's so pretty and shiny in the sun/light, how can you not like it.

Feel the rainbow! This is without any polish underneath it.

The blue has a blue polish underneath.

I'm not sure if it makes much of a difference having the polish underneath, personal preference I guess.

I used a dotting tool again instead of tweezers to place the shards and with the blue shards I placed them intentionally aligned whereas with the rainbow I just did it haphazardly.

Glitter mermaid

Hi all!
I thought it was time I tried to do mermaid nails. Everyone has their own versions but i think mermaid nails are anything glittery and scaly.
Here is my small collection of shimmery scales.

HINT: Whenever you do anything that has bumps/things that can catch DON'T try them out on your thumbs or index fingers. These fingers re used the most so they won't last as long.

With that in mind I chose my middle finger.

  1. Put a small amount of clear polish on the proximal part of your nail (closest to your body) and use tweezers or dotting tool ( I used the dotting tool with a little bit of clear polish on the tip) to pick the pieces up.
  2. Start layering them like a house roof up you nail. (add more polish when necessary)
  3. Once finished, place another coat over the top and vuala!

The colour turned out no where near as bright as I thought so I may put down a purple polish before hand next time.

Enjoy!

Drastic decals

I've been exploring other nail blogs since starting mine and i've found some great ones like Nailhilism , Nailed it NZ and Wacky Laki. While searching through the tutorials I found a very interesting idea that I just HAD to try, and you should too!

It's from Wacky Laki,  'DIY cutout decal' tutorial (check it out).
http://wackylaki.blogspot.co.nz/2012/04/tutorial-tuesday-diy-cutout-decals.html

The beginning step is easy as pie. You paint several layers of nail polish on a plastic like glad wrap or sandwich bags, easy. I choose these colours based on the colours already on my nails (white, pastel green and red).
Don't paint your nails fully just yet, wait to do your top coat of the your colour until these glad wrap ones are ready.

Once the paint on plastic is ready, peel it off. Wacky Laki uses a tweezer but I found it easier to use a ruler to peel off, like a sticker.

Then cut up the sticker polish into designs you like. I did an arrow and lines. Add the top layer of the polish on your nails and carefully place your sticker polish on. I used scissors to cut off the excess  which ended up messy (as you can see) so I might invest in a cut box cutter (only if you feel comfortable with it and don't get carried away).

I really messed my first attempt up so i'll most likely be doing another one soon.

Thanks Wacky Laki

Dotting Tool

My University had a concert 'Sounds in the sun' this weekend and surprisingly there were some pretty cool stalls. My favourite happened to be a nail stall (shock) were I scored a cheap dotting tool since toothpicks are not very good.

Concert picture

It was no surprise that the next nail pattern I do will involve dotting.

Doing dots is great, you get to use as many colours as you like without looking crazy.

Here I didn't want to take the gems off yet so I just did 2 fingers.

Then I used 12 colours to crete all of these dots.

Conclusion: When you do your own dotting at home make sure that your polish isn't thick otherwise it leaves strings (like the yellow), but if you'll use it, definitely get a dotting tool.
